Fantastic Beasts; A Magical New Beginning

Fantastic Beasts has been eagerly anticipated by Harry Potter Fans since the release of the last film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) in 2011. With loveable creatures and new characters the trilogy is off to a good start.

While there are no links to Harry, Hermione or Ron and not a Mandrake or Cornish Pixie in sight; Fantastic Beasts creates new beginning based in the past. The film boasts several new creatures not seen in previous films but often found in the Harry Potter games or mentioned briefly in the films.

It is due to snippets such as these from the books and various games that the creatures in Fantastic Beasts can be accepted as part of the wizarding world we know and have come to love. This film enables the characters of Newt’s various creatures to be explored as no film or book has detailed before (save the short 2001 Comic Release Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)

The Plot

The year is 1926, Grindelwald is attacking the magical community all around the world. Newt Scamander (Played by Eddie Redmayne) arrives in New York from equitoral New Guinea after spending a year in the field writing a book on magical creatures.

The film introduces the wonders in Newt’s suitcase and creatures through the eyes of a No-Maj/Muggle Jacob Kowalski (played by Dan Folger). With his nervous charm and friendliness Jacob really steals the show. His character is instantly likeable with a great humour and kindness that is shown through the film.

Jacob asks all of the awkward questions and opens up the American magical world to all of us No-Maj’s. He follows Newt through the city helping him to collect the escaped creatures from Newt’s suitcase.

While all of this this is going on the vicious Mary Lou (Played by Samantha Morton) is heading up the New Salem Philanthropic Society against Witches and Wizards. Her hatred of magic is not explained during the film; making the viewer wonder if it’s another Petunia Dursley my-sister-was-a-witch-and-I-was-jealous issue.

After an incident in a bank involving a Niffler, Tina Goldenstein (played by Katherine Waterstone) a local MACUSA enforcer, picks Newt up on a ‘Section 3A’ (Not wiping a No- Maj’s mind) . I can liken our introduction to MACUSA headquarters as that of the moving stairs of Hogwarts; plain but magical.

I am not going to spill the beans on everything, just in case you haven’t seen it. If you are a fan of the Wizarding universe then definitely check it out; you might just like it.
This post was written a few months ago, just after seeing the film twice and I had totally forgotten to finish this! Oh well- it can go up as it is 😀

All the best,

Vee 🙂
