As I placed the winning bid on a retro tape collection called ‘Storyteller’ from my childhood I felt like I’d won the lottery. Not for me though; for my son.
You can imagine my elation this week when I picked up a tape rack from a charity shop for £3.50 to store these bad boys in. I just love it when you find something you have been looking for for a while.
When I was younger I liked nothing better than to put on my headphones, click in my favourite tape and slip away into a story.
My tape collection was secondhand from my sister and sadly it wasn’t complete. It was a mail order magazine that had accompanying tapes of the stories. (More info here).
I would have never thought I’d one day have the complete 1st series of Storyteller, let alone be buying it for my son.
Maybe the format will be good because I feel like you have to take your time with tapes. There is no instant gratification of track skipping, inless you have a fancy feature on toir stereo. With tapes, you have to listen to the content or work out where to fast forward/ rewind to; like I used to have to!
My hope is that he will enjoy these stories as much as I did as a child. I’m also hoping the format will not be a challenge.
